2016 achievements
The highlights in strategic plan are:

More
  • Puig achieved a reduction of 18% in emissions per unit produced in 2016, consequence of a good evolution and continuity in the three programs (energy, water and waste reduction) defined for all plants.

  • To optimize management of natural resources in an objective that needs not only actions aimed to improve the building performance but to engage employees, because they are the key to make things happen. The company has an internal communication plan about sustainability, including initiatives that encourage employees' engagement to actions.

  • In 2016 stand out the implementation of Multimodal transportation in Malt and Greece. Puig and its partners contribute to a better air quality by reducing not only the carbon footprint but also the noise and pollution in the city.

  • Through the use of additives that act as a reinforcement and maintains plastic color and characteristics, Puig has reduced the weight of thermoformed trays and the subsequent generation of waste.

  • Puig is working with its suppliers in order to achieve 100% cardboard from forest managed in a responsible manner by 2020. In 2016, Puig can ensure that 86% of cardboard came from sustainable sourcing.

FOCUS ON REDUCING COMPANY’S ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT

Puig uses GHG emissions as a baseline indicator to assess the environmental impact of the organization. Puig’s main goal is to work on reducing its emissions. In 2016, the company has decrease by 3% the carbon footprint. It is relevant that the company has been able to maintain the decrease in the intensity of its emissions, after years of strong downturns in which, in other measures, the company made the switch towards the consumption of renewable energy.

Due to the integration of Jean Paul Gaultier business in 2016, transport and distribution emissions have increased. Besides this, Puig wants to take another step forward with the company's entry into the emissions trading market in order to achieve absolute emission reduction targets.

For this reason, Puig has offsetted 2.600 tonnes of CO2, achieving an 11% reduction of relative GHG emissions through Mariposas Hydroelectric Offsetting Project. This Project consists in the construction and operation of a Run-Of-River hydropower plant in Chile that generates renewable energy.

Progress in the development of the sustainability strategy has led to the fulfilment of different achievements through the five pillars of work:

Product stewardship

The main objective of the first pillar of Puig’s Sustainability Strategy is to link the characteristics that make the company’s products a reference for its consumers with the least environmental impact at every stage of its life cycle.

  • Through the use of additives that act as a reinforcement and maintains plastic color and characteristics, Puig has reduced the weight of thermofored trays and the subsequent generation of waste.

  • Puig has guides to promote the use of more sustainable materials and ingredients, like the White Book of materials and processes, which assesses the impact of materials combination from different portfolio selected products.

The recent update of the internal perfumery blacklist and the supplier form, bringing us closer to our objective of gradually eliminating the presence of persistent biological agents in our formulas.

Sustainable sourcing

The second pillar of Puig’s Sustainability Program is the sustainable sourcing of ingredients and raw materials along Puig’s value chain. Identified as a strategic priority, Puig has published its Sustainable Sourcing Policy in order to promote its values on all suppliers by encouraging them to adopt its policies and implement the best sustainability practices, including raw materials from responsible sources.

  • Puig works closely with other committed beauty industry leaders and the international initiative Natural Resources Stewardship Circle, NRSC whose mission is to ensure natural raw materials from responsible sourcing for the beauty, fragrance and flavors sectors.

Responsible Logistics

Puig is committed to achieving sustainability in the whole life cycle of its products which also includes logistics. Raw materials and finished products require transportation and distribution from their origin until the shops where our clients can acquire Puig’s fragrances’ products. In both cases, it relies on external logistics operators to perform these activities.

More
  • Line of last years has been maintained in terms of sustainability management in warehouses, such as the process automation or consumption reduction, etc., advancing mainly in the automation of pallet baling system in Castellar del Vallés and in the replacement of lighting system of Cabanillas by LED lamps.

  • In 2016 stand out the implementation of Multimodal transportation in Malt and Greece. Puig and its partners contribute to a better air quality by reducing not only the carbon footprint but also the noise and pollution in the city.

  • During 2016, Puig developed with its main partners a roadmap to reduce distribution and transportation emissions.

Responsible manufacturing

Focused on environmental performance in production processes, the main objective of Puig in this pillar is to obtain the highest quality with the lowest environmental impact in order to achieve Carbon Neutral in Manufacturing by 2020.

  • Puig achieved a reduction of 18% in emissions per unit produced in 2016, consequence of a good evolution and continuity in the three programs (energy, water and waste reduction) defined for all plants.

  • Based on Standard 50001, all manufacturing plants are working on the Energetic Efficiency Model, which enabled Puig to achieve a 4% reduction in electricity consumption per hour of operation.

  • Due to Energetic Efficiency Model, there has been a reduction of 7% in gas consumption per hour of operation.

  • Manufacturing Water Efficiency Model has reached a reduction of 4% of water consumption per produced unit.

  • Zero waste to landfill has been consolidated since 2015.
Valorization rate has been maintained in a 96%. And there has been a reduction of 12% in hazardous waste generation. The implementation of a waste collection system for light packaging (plastic, cans and bricks), installing specific containers for the light packaging collection.

Employees and facilities

This pillar has two programs with closely related objectives: on the one hand, it is the goal to improve the environmental performance at all facilities, and on the other hand there is the purpose of minimizing employees’ environmental impact.
